Styrofoam Collection events: We are holding Styrofoam collection events in May, September and February each year.  Please email ipswichrecycles@gmail for more information.

Curbside Compost Program:

Sign up is on-going. You pay from now through Oct. 31st, 2013. We take your food waste, kitty litter and dirty paper out of your trash and have it composted. Acceptable includes food scraps (meat and bones are OK!), kitty litter, and soiled paper plus yard waste. The cost is <$2.00 per week per household for weekly collection--less than the cost of an over throw bag! Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Recycling /Solid Waste Policy:

Effective date of 6/28/10:

  • 1 Bag/Barrel Trash up to 35 gallons per week
  • UNLIMITED Single Stream WEEKLY Recycling
  • Milk/juice cartons, juice boxes, Pringles containers and clean aluminum foil/pie plates, in curbside recycling.
  • * NEW! Bulky, rigid plastic items (e.g. laundry baskets, trash barrels, plastic toys) are accepted at the Transfer Station, Wed & Sat 8am-3:30pm.
  • *NEW! Scrap Metal items are now accepted at the Transfer Station ! Items must be at least 60% metal. No TV's or Monitors please---take these to Best Buy customer service desk for recycling.
  • No Styrofoam (Watch for in town collection events) and NO Plastic Bags (Shaws and MArket Basket collect these for recycling)
  • Cardboard boxes do not need to be broken down for recycling
  • Glass, Plastic #1-7, Tin, Aluminum, paper, gray paper & cardboard can be placed together in a container with lettering “Recycle Only” and/or recycle stickers from DPW office
  • Seasonal: Boat shrink wrap disposal at the Transfer Station, from April 1st to June 30th.
  • Trash Overthrow Bags will be available for $10.00 for 5-33 gallon bags through local businesses such as Conley's Drug, Tedford's Hardware and Shaws.

• Recycling at Public Events

Recycling is mandatory and bins are available for your use at public events. The Recycling committee has 10 portable recycling bins available for use at events in Ipswich. For more information, or to request the bins for use at your event please email us.

• Fluorescent Bulbs
CFLs are now collected in a box at the Electric Light Department during regular business hours. In addition, you may also bring them as well as tube bulbs (and all devices containing mercury) to the TRansfer Station during operating hours

• Wireless Devices Collection
The Recycling Committee has placed small, green bins for the collection of unwanted wireless devices. The devices include, but are not limited to, PDAs, iPods, digital cameras, cell phones, etc. Bins are located at the library and inside the entrance of Town Hall and at the DPW counter. Devices are bought by Recycling For Charities, which refurbishes or recycles them. All funds received from the sale of these devices help defray the administrative and logistical costs incurred by the Recycling Committee.


• Recycling Committee

The Recycling Committee welcomes new members interested in working productively and cooperatively to meet the Committee’s mandate of increasing recycling and reducing trash disposal costs for the Town of Ipswich. The Recycling Committee is an advisory committee to the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Selectmen appoints members. Individuals interested in participating are encouraged to attend a meeting and seek appointment if interested. The Committee meets monthly and meetings are held from 6:30-8pm at Town Hall.

• Mercury Recovery Program

The DPW is collecting products that contain mercury. Examples of collected items include thermostats, Mercury switches, thermometers, elemental Mercury, blood pressure units, flow meters, barometers and button cell batteries (found in watches, cameras, calculators, hearing aids, and personal organizers) and any raw mercury in original containers. The DPW also will exchange a glass Mercury fever thermometer for a new digital thermometer. Please call ahead at 978-356-6612 to be sure that the container is safe. Acceptable items should be brought to the second floor of Town Hall during regular business hours.

• Paint and Varnishes
Oil Paint and related thinners and varnishes are accepted at the DPW's bi-annual Special Collection.  Events are held in mid May and mid September each year.  Please email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
