Town Wharf Pump Station Project

TWPS

The Ipswich Wastewater Department is in the process of evaluating the Town Wharf Pump Station located at the Ipswich Town Wharf on East Street. The goal of this project is to upgrade or replace the station to ensure reliable operation for future decades.

The Town Wharf Pump Station was originally constructed in 1958. It is the largest pump station in the wastewater collection system, and handles all flow to the Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Town Wharf Pump Station experiences average daily flows in the range of 0.6 to 1.8 million gallons per day (MGD). Maximum daily flows can reach up to 3.2 MGD. Concerns relating to the structural integrity of the station, health and safety, flooding/coastal resiliency, and regulatory compliance led the Wastewater Department to complete a comprehensive evaluation of the station in 2018. Findings from the evaluation will be used to inform next steps for future improvements. Since the pump station is located at the Town Wharf near significant commercial and recreational activities, rehabilitation or replacement of this station will have important impacts on the community and its use of the site.
