On Wednesday, June 26th the Ipswich Conservation Commission will be hosting Sarah Courchesne who will be presenting a program on ‘The Secret Lives of the Gulls of Appledore’. The program is at 7 p.m. in Room A at the Ipswich Town Hall. It is open and free to the general public. Gulls often elicit strong feelings. Thieving French fries at
the beach and dumpster diving behind fast food restaurants has earned them a
negative reputation among humans. Most people do not know that they have rich
social lives. Pairs often stay together for many years and equally contribute
to the incubation of eggs and the raising of babies. Come learn about the lives
of the gulls that nest every year on Appledore Island off the coast of southern
Maine.
Sarah Courchesne grew up in Massachusetts and lives
currently in New Hampshire. She has been a bird enthusiast her whole life. She
trained as a veterinarian at Tufts and is currently an Associate Professor of
Natural Sciences at Northern Essex Community College. She coordinates the long
term study of the gull colony on Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals.
